With a history of over 140 years, the voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH (VASD) is a European leader in the manufacturing of high-quality steel. Located in the heart of Styria, close to the iron-bearing “Erzberg” mountain, it is only logical that metallurgy and steel making are part of a long tradition. Equipped with two blast furnaces that supply an integrated steel making route, over 1.6 million tons of steel are produced on a yearly basis. For VASD, research and development are the basis of continuing success. Our most-recent addition the “TechMet” resembles a downsized version of our steel production plant (from melting to continuous casting) and allows us to simulate realistic near-production conditions on a smaller scale (5 tons). For VASD, the PURESCRAP project is the perfect opportunity to take one step further towards our goal of a more sustainable future with voestalpine “greentec steel”.
Role in the project
- Performing and evaluating tests under near-production conditions starting with scrap melting and ending with a finished cast bloom.
- Proving the industrial viability of the PURESCRAP concept and the use of the sorted and upgraded scrap.
- Analysis of the finished product qualities.
The team
The project will be supported by a research team which is made up of experts for steel metallurgy and materials science.
